Since 1857 St. Patrick Parish in Wyandotte has been the center of faith-life for thousands of Catholics. Originally known as St. Charles Borromeo Parish, it became St. Patrick Parish in 1883 when the new church was blessed on October 7th. The first church dedicated to St. Charles was the rectory and church until then. With the new church built, the original church became our first parish school in 1885, and in one form or another we have had full-time Catholic education for our families to the present. CHURCH AND SCHOOL DATES OF INTEREST 1857 - 1st wooden church, 30' by 50' built on the present parish grounds and known as St. Charles Borromeo Church. 1st Catholic Church structure in Wyandotte and the 1st church structure of any denomination within the city. Furnishing were a small altar, backless benches, an organ and oil lamps. 1883 - Dedication of Church named St. Patrick (200 families and cost $22,000.00). 1885 - 1st Catholic school in old church building opened with 150 students in two classrooms, taught by three Sisters, Servnts of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The I.H.M. Sisters served St. Patrick School and parish community for 83 years. 1887 - 1st Convent completed. 1889 - 1st Rectory was built. 1906 - New school was built. 1907 - 300 families in the parish. Last 8th grade class graduates from the old wooden school building, after which it was torn down. 1908 - Golden Jubilee of St. Patrick's Church. 1915 - Bell Tower and Vestibule were added (gift of Fr. Hally). 1916 - 1st class graduated from St. Patrick High School. The last class graduated in 1968 (in all, 1,350 seniors graduated from St. Patrick H.S. while it was in operation for 83 years). 1922 - New Rectory built (the first one was moved to 6th and Vinewood Streets). 1924 - New High School was built (from 1968 to 1980 Wayne County Community College was housed in the building). 1929 - New Pipe Organ with 965 pipes was purchased from the Votteler-Holtkamp-Sparling Company of Cleveland, OH. The parish had to build a new gallery to hold it and it was considered the finest in the area. 1949 - Church was redecorated. 1955 - New Convent on north side of Superior Blvd. was built. 1957 - St. Patrick's Centennial celebrated. 1966 - Gabriel Richard High School opened. 1970 - St. Patrick Grade School closed and Wyandotte Catholic Consolidated School (W.C.C.S.) opened. 1977 - The parish had 900 registered families. 1982 - 125th Anniversary Year celebrated. 1985 - Dedication of the new St. Patrick Parish Center. 1989 - Child Care Center began operation. 1992 - Parish has 950 families and the Child Care Center has 100+ enrolled. 1995 - Samaritan Assistance Center was formulated and housed in Doherty-Hall Center by 12 churches of various denominations. 1995 - Formulated ties with a "sister parish", Our Lady of the Light in Nicaragua. 2002 - The Downriver Community Food Pantry was established and set up in the basement of Doherty-Hall Center.
